NITRATES

Nitrates (NO3) are natural substances composed of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O). Thanks to the action of sunlight, nitrates help the photosynthesis, which is necessary for the plants-growing.

The main source of nitrates in the water is agricultural. They especially come from livestock farming and fertilizers. Moreover nitrates are used as food conservatives especially in products of meat and fish.

Nevertheless nitrates can seriously damage the human health.
In adults, high concentration of nitrates can cause cancer while in newborn babies, can destroy haemoglobin and cause methaemoglobinemia.

Therefore it is really important to consider the amount of nitrates in mineral water:
- 45 mg/lt in common mineral water
- 10 mg/lt in mineral water for newborn babies
